Wellsville Optic-News Montgomery Co MO Sept 11 1970 picture with obit G R BARTON, Local Barber, Died Sept 6 Funeral services for G R (Dick) Barton, 78, were held Tuesday afternoon at the Myers Funeral Home in Wellsville just a week and one day after the funeral of his wife, Marie, to whom he had been married for more than fifty years. Rev Clarence Smith, pastor of the United Methodist-Presbyterian Church of which both were long-time members, officiated. Burial was at the side of his wife in the Wellsville Cemetery. The following served as pallbearers: Garland Kuhne, Clarence Lehnen, Dave Cleveland, John Hopper, William Crouch and Don Poole. Mr Barton had been in extremely poor health for a number of months. He was to attend services for his wife, but on Thursday of last week was taken to Twain Haven Nursing Home at Perry MO. for round the clock care. His death occurred early Sunday morning. Mr Barton retired in 1960 when he sold his barber shop which he had operated since 1923. Prior to that he owned and operated a clothing store in Wellsville. He was public-spirited and gave freely of his time in community service. He was Wellsville city clerk for 17 years, secretary of Masonic bodies 20 years, was a member of the board of education for nine years and for three years of that time was president of the board. He was a past officer of various masonic bodies including serving as past patron of Martha Washington Chapter; Order of Eastern Star. Mr Barton was a devoted member of the Masonic Lodge. In 1965, he received a fifty-year masonic membership pin from the Wellsville Blue Lodge. He held membership in Triune Chapter and is a past high priest of Central Council of Royal Arch Masons. He served faithfully in Martha Washington Chapter, Order of Easter Star, as long as health permitted and was a past patron. George Richard Barton was born in Laddonia July 12 1892, a son of George Barton and his wife, Margaret Elder Barton. He spent his young life in Laddonia and moved to Wellsville prior to serving in the army in World War II. He was married to Marie Jones Buche on June 6 1920. He is survived by a son, John Richard of Overland MO, and a daughter Mrs Arnold (Carolyn) Schwaninger of Webster Groves MO. There are seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
