NOTE: Ellis and Mary Ann homesteaded 40 acres near Mt Pleasant Church. He built her a cabin and left her till he came home from the war. She couldn't read or write and had to walk a mile to get a neighbor to read the letters, so she borrowed a book and learned to read and write. There were quite a few Indians in and near Sesser area. She said one
old Indian used to come and sit on her steps till she fed him.
